Why Do Puppies Chew on Chewing Toys?

Chewing toys are very popular among small dogs. A dog toy designed to be chewed is specifically designed to be gnawed by small animals for certain purposes, usually relief from boredom and to help small animals, such as puppies, gain weight. If your puppy chews on the toys you provide him, he is not learning basic chewing skills - he is only enjoying the sugary, stimulating snack. While it can be satisfying to watch him try to finish all of the toys in his mouth, if he has other things in his mouth that he doesn't need to satisfy, this is not the way to make him "good."

Puppies have a lot of nerve endings in their mouths, and it is these nerves that they use to relieve their boredom with chewing on chew toys. There are other things in their mouths that stimulate their teeth and gums, such as teething rings, buttons, pins, etc. This is why it is important that you never let your dogs chew on these things. Although many people think of dogs as not being able to eat anything that is not made of meat, this simply is not true. Many dogs are perfectly happy to chomp on soft toys, including plush toys, even if it were made of some other material.

If you feel like your puppy is not getting enough exercise, but you don't want to resort to having him "put up with" your carpet or hardwood floor, consider purchasing a number of chew toys for him to choose from. Chewing toys will provide him with the stimulation he needs in order to become accustomed to chewing and therefore, healthy, strong teeth. When he chews on something he should not, make sure that you remove the object immediately so he does not continue to gnaw on something that is no longer good for him.
